WTMD is Going HD

What Is HD Radio?

  • CD-quality sound

  • Crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion

  • Bundle analog and digital audio signals (with textual data, such as artist and song information and more)

  • The signal will be compatible with HD Radio receivers and analog radios

  • HD Radio technology is a digital radio standard developed by iBiquity Digital and recognized by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

How does it work?

  • Instead of sending out one analog signal, stations send out a bundled signal – both analog and digital. Because it is digital, textual data such as traffic, stock info and song titles can be sent out, as well

  • The digital signal layer is compressed

  • HD Digital Radio supports CD-quality sound as well as song titles and artist names. And because the digital signal piggybacks onto a conventional broadcast signal, it is free to the listener

  • HD Radio sends more information over the same radio frequency by digitizing the signal

  • The extra bandwidth of an HD Radio signal leaves room for completely separate channels operating on the same frequency

  • Multipath interference, caused by the signal reflecting off of buildings, is ignored by the digital radio, which is able to discern the true signal and ignore interference

  • The three-layered signal is transmitted from the radio station's upgraded digital transmitter

What do I need?

  • An HD Radio Receiver, yes, that's it!

Okay, how much will it cost me?

  • Reception is free, with no subscription costs

  • The cost for the station is about $200,000 to convert over to HD Radio Transmission
