It’s a bluesy Shadow today… Both the original and shadow artists are from the same state and the song describes a natural disaster in that state but really is a metaphor for the composer’s relationship problems.
The original artist isn’t well known but was a huge influence on the shadow artist’s vocal style. The shadow artist also learned from guitarist Fenton Robinson’s work on the original 1958 recording and the song became the title track of his debut album in 1983. It was a standard in his live shows before a fatal accident cut his career short at age 35.
The original artist also died at a relatively young age, of cancer in 1994 at age 57.
