Governance and Finances

WTMD believes as a non profit, non commercial radio station that we need to be as transparent in our governance processes and financial accountability.  WTMD is licensed to and owned by Towson University, a state institution of higher learning and part of the University System of Maryland.  The Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland serves as WTMD’s ultimate governing board.  A list of Members can be found here.   A list of the Board of Regents open meetings can be found here.  We link to these sites so you are able to access the most up to date information about our governance.

Organization:

WTMD reports to, Josianne Pennington, the Vice-President of University Marketing and Communications.

Leadership: WTMD is headed by General Manager, Stephen Yasko, who is responsible for aspects of the station’s operations.  Steve focuses on our external relationships with civic and community leaders as well as our leadership donors.  Steve is a 30 year public radio professional with experience at WAMU, NPR and other public radio organizations.  He also throws one heck of a homemade pizza party.

WTMD consists of four distinct divisions:

Programming:  Our programming department is headed by Scott Mullins, our program director.  All On-Air and Production staff members report to Scott.  Scott also supervises our Operations Department, headed by Jason George, our Operations Manager. Scott is also our honorary micro soda and soft drink explorer.

Membership:  Kristin Bachran is our Membership Director and is responsible for all aspects of fund drives, gift processing, volunteer management and thank you gift fulfillment.  She’s also known around the office as having perfected an Old Bay Peanut Brittle recipe.

Leadership Giving and Foundation Support:  Amy Hall, Manager of Individual giving and Foundation Support, oversees members who contribute $500 or more the station annually. Amy hosts these members at special events.  Amy also solicits, writes and documents WTMD’s grant applications and administers the grants that we receive.  Amy is WTMD’s annual representative on the Jam Cruise.

Underwriting and Sponsorships: Chris Hawkins leads our Underwriting Department which solicits corporate and business sponsorships for our programming.  He also ensures that the copy used in on air announcements meets FCC requirements.  While in sales, Chris has never been known to wear a plaid sports jacket.

Finances:

WTMD receives funding from our listeners, corporate sponsors, Towson University, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other foundations  and grant making organizations.  Members of the public are encouraged to contact the General Manager to review these reports, have them explained and to provide time for members of the public to ask questions about our finances.

Each year, WTMD is audited by Stoy Malone, a Certified Public Accounting firm.  This audit tests our financial systems and provides reports to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on which our annual Community Service Grant is calculated.  Our fiscal year ends on June 30th and latest audit is generally available the following January. WTMD has no employees whose compensation meet the IRS 990 definition of significant compensation.
